The Gross-Yowell Story
Shortly after returning from WWII, W.O. Gross and Orville Yowell opened their first small lumberyard on 4th and Indiana in downtown Waco. As the area grew, so did the need for growth in the small business. In 1961 they moved the company to the current location, to a larger facility on Franklin Avenue. They also added a yard in Killeen, Texas.
The company’s locally famous logo has been around since the company began. While serving in India during WWII, Mr. Gross noticed the use of elephants to haul large timbers. Seeing this, he made it the company’s logo. It hasn’t changed since.
Today, Mr. Gross’s son and grandson run the third-generation company. Gross-Yowell is one of today’s largest building material suppliers in central Texas. The company strives to treat its customers and employees with respect and fairness while providing a quality product and service at a fair price. We hope our customers will feel at home as our business serves theirs.
